Nursing School Study Tips! (Part 2)


Today, I am going to share some additional study tips that I use for nursing school.





Before Class : 

  • Print out the lecture PowerPoint before class
  • Review the PowerPoint before class 

During Class :

  • Type (or hand write) notes during class
  • Don't be afraid to ask lots of questions during class - (majority of the time, another student will have the same question as you)

After Class :

  • Review notes after class (rather than waiting til the end of the week and procrastinating)
  • Write out notes that you typed in class onto the printed PowerPoint
  • Read/Type out the objectives of the assigned reading
  • Find the answer to the objectives in book
  • Take notes from book & add them to PowerPoint notes
  • Print or write out all the key points from the chapters of the assigned reading
  • Do lots of practice questions!!!
  • Watch YouTube videos on topics you don’t understand
  • Review a little everyday

REPEAT!

How Nursing School Works

So, you think you want to go to nursing school, but not sure how it all works? Don't worry; I'll explain. Depending on your degree choice (either Associate's degree in nursing or Bachelor's), typically, most nursing programs are two years in length. My nursing program is 5 semesters long. I am currently in my 4th semester of nursing school. Here's how it works: typically, you'll spend your first semester (or first 2 semesters) completing courses like Foundations in Nursing Skills, Pharmacology, Pathophysiology, and Foundations in Patient Care. Basically all of your basic nursing courses. Then you'll progress to harder courses like Med Surg, Mental Health, Community Health, OB/GYN, Geriatrics, Pediatrics, and Med Surg 2. My Top Study Tips for Nursing School

One of my biggest challenges in Nursing School was figuring out how to study for my exams. Because let's be honest, nursing school exams are no joke. So learning how to study for them is important. Every nursing program will be different. Every course will be different. Your studying techniques may differ from mine. However, here are a few study tips that have helped me and may help you if you are just starting nursing school: #1 - Study in Advance! Do not (i repeat - DO NOT) wait until the last minute to study for your exams. Like I said in previous posts, cramming does not work in nursing school. There's too much material to learn all in one day. Study a little bit of the material every single day - even if your exam is weeks away. If you do this, by the time you reach a day or two before the exam, it'll simply feel like more of a review and not studying. #2 - Figure out what type of learner you are.
